In Iowa, a different regulatory approach was enacted

2012-05-16 parašė precisionmachinings

During the 2012 state legislative session, 27 states have introduced legislation to regulate operators of commercial roll-your-own machines. Of these 27 states, 10 have passed legislation to regulate these RYO machines in various manners. The State of Arkansas enacted a law completely banning the use of commercial RYO machines in the state. The ban went into effect on Jan. 1, 2012.

In Iowa, a different regulatory approach was enacted that goes into effect on July 1, 2012. The Iowa requirements include operators paying a state excise tax per cigarette manufactured using only federal tax paid bulk tobacco listed on the Iowa state tobacco directory maintaining a secure counting meter on the machine that will count the number of cigarettes manufactured and dispensed by the machin limiting the location of RYO machines to adult-only facilities and requiring compliance with state fire safe cigarette laws as of

The Idaho law which passed and goes into effect on July 1, 2012, mandates that these commercial is labeled, be a brand family listed on the state’s approved tobacco directory and all applicable state tobacco taxes have been paid.

Similar to Alabama the State of Oklahoma passed a bill that prohibits the use of RYO machines in the state, unless the operator applies for and possesses a permit to manufacture cigarettes from the Federal Alcohol Tobacco Tax Trade Bureau. The Oklahoma law goes into effect of July 1, 2012.The South Dakota law goes into effect on July 1, 2012, and deems commercial RYO machine operators to be manufacturers of cigarettes while delaying enforcement of the state’s fire safe cigarette laws until July 1, 2014.

The harmonograph was the first art machine

2012-05-14 parašė precisionmachinings

Victorian parties were often enlivened by a simple device called a harmonograph. It used basic physics, a pencil, and a piece of paper, to produce a large variety of beautiful designs. The invention of this device is generally attributed to Professor Hugh Blackburn, a teacher of mathematics at the University of Glasgow. He studied how multiple repetitive motions could overlap each other over time in evolving ways and came up with this simple, but interesting device.TechShop Detroit celebrates grand opening

Take a couple of pendulums, put weights on the end, and swing them back and forward. The two should not be in sync with each other. Instead, they should be set off at slightly different times, describing slightly different swings, at slightly different angles. To the top of one pendulum, attach a pad of paper. To the top of another, attach a simple wooden arm with a pen or pencil attached to it. Put the pen or pencil on the paper, and the slightly off-kilter swings of the pendulums will trace out a strange shape. Depending on the angles of the pendulums, the length of their path, and the time it takes them to describe it, they’ll come up with a seemingly endless variety of shapes.

This invention, called the harmonograph because it made a written record of the harmony of the pendulums, caught on like wildfire. People created more elaborate ones, replacing one or both swinging pendulums with arms that could rotate and swing out long ovals. Eventually people added a third arm, which would be attached to the pen-holding arm, and so the two would interfere with each other’s swings, creating an even more complex pattern. People published guides which showed the right movement to produce certain patterns. Others just experimented. It was an entertaining party game for the rest of the century.

TechShop Detroit celebrates grand opening

2012-05-09 parašė precisionmachinings

The ribbon-cutting ceremony Friday at the grand opening of TechShop was unlike others. The ribbon was not made of cloth, but steel. Instead of a giant pair of scissors to snip it in two, the ribbon-cutters Randy Visintanier, director of Ford Motor Co. research and innovation, and U.S. Rep. John Dingell donned safety goggles and used a plasma cutter. Dingell steadied the machine, while Visintanier sawed the ribbon, white-hot sparks cascading, making other dignitaries step back. Once finished, their efforts were met with applause from a crowd of about 50.

Today, you’re seeing America moving forward Dingell said after. You’re seeing cooperation between cities, government and two major industries you’re seeing TechShop and you’re seeing Ford. They’re going to make the kind of jobs to make America competitive. They’re going to help us do what said: We’re going to out-compete, out-build, outwork and out-educate them all, and that’s going to make America great in a difficult and competitive world.

Dingell was one of several politicians attending the grand opening of TechShop a square-foot facility owned by Ford Land at 800 Republic Drive. Also present were U.S. Rep. Hansen Clarke Dearborn Mayor Jack O’Reilly and Kalamazoo Mayor Bobby Hopewell.I happened to visit TechShop in San Francisco in March Hopewell said.I’ve been working with a lot of tech entrepreneurs in Kalamazoo. I have an interest in this sort of creativity on the west side of the state in Kalamazoo, so I wanted to come here and check it out. We all know that we need the entire state especially Detroit to be successful if this state is going to continue to come back.

TechShop was founded by Jim Newton and Ridge McGhee. Newton who served as science adviser on the Discovery Channel show Mythbusters and taught robotics at the College of San Mateo in California was inspired to create TechShop when seeing his students’ frustration when they had no equipment and tools to work on their projects.

Rage against the washing machine

2012-05-07 parašė precisionmachinings

Normally, when any household device, appliance or gizmo breaks down, I snap into action, as would any engineering geek worth his multimeter. If somethings not working, I have full justification to tear into it and either fix it properly, giving it the ol’ Boone County workaround even more satisfying or at the very least dissect it and conduct a full autopsy. The lack of activity in the direction of the Newcastle

But when the washing machine goes down I don’t even check for a pulse or blown fuse or smell around to find the burned bits. It is an old top-loader, and although it uses only 0.21 kilowatt-hours per load I am antsy to get one of the new sexy high-efficiency front-loaders. Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead, check Consumer Reports … the new washing machine is on its way. While removing the old washer I find it actually is arc-welded to the dryer, no doubt related to some previous historical Boone County workaround. That explains why we always get a little shock when we touch the metal tub while barefoot on the concrete floor. Nothing bad just enough to keep you honest and connected to the real world.

Naturally, the new high-efficiency washer calls for special high-efficiency detergent, which sounds fishy. My ever-prepared wife already has seen this coming, accepted it much more gracefully than I would and procured the proper high-efficiency detergent. The new machine seems a bit more complicated than it really needs to be and most of the wash cycles take a whole lot longer than I expected, with the exception of one called speed wash which instantly becomes my favorite. Why screw around with a slow wash? Less time probably uses less power too.

Perhaps speed wash doesnt deep-clean like the hourlong settings, but as mild-mannered, middle-aged, Midwestern white folks, our laundry needs are modest. No blood or grass stains or any dramatic stuff from the detergent commercials. Our biggest laundry challenges are no more than the occasional zinfandel incident and my sweaty basketball shirt. Free laundry tip for men: I usually give that a rinse in the rain barrel and dry it in the yard before I put it in the laundry basket, which smoothes things out a bit and wards off permastank.

The lack of activity in the direction of the Newcastle

However, there was to be no repeat of their London horrors this time, as Cisse opened the scoring with a sumptuous shot after 19 minutes; his goal was as arrogant as it was classy. The lack of activity in the direction of the Newcastle goal saw substitutes Frank Lampard and Juan Mata warming up on the touchline long before the half-time break, yet Cech needed to be at his best to keep out Ba’s screaming shot, before the final act of the first half saw the Senegal striker crash a shot off the woodwork.

Pardew must have anticipated a Chelsea onslaught after the break, yet not even the introductions of Mata, Didier Drogba and Lampard inspired Di Matteo’s men until the clock ticked into the final ten minutes. Even then, the home side struggled to raise their tempo to the necessary levels before their hopes were finally dashed by the second Cisse’s wonder strike.

“You have to give Newcastle credit,” admitted Di Matteo. “They scored two great goals and played very well. Now it’s going to be very difficult for us to reach fourth spot, but we won’t give up and will keep pushing until the end.Looking back over the whole season, we have dropped too many points and that is why we are in the position we are in. Now we have to pick everyone up and try and get going again ahead of the FA Cup final on Saturday. I’m sure we will be fine.”

This was a night when fantasy became reality for Newcastle as they downed one of the Premier League’s traditional superpowers on enemy territory. If they repeat this performance in their next game in front of a passionate home crowd on Sunday, Manchester City’s title party may well go the same way as Chelsea’s hopes of a top four finish.

Thieves targeting city cash machines

2012-04-28 parašė precisionmachinings

A series of incidents in Glasgow over the past week has prompted people to report concerns to police or their bank after becoming suspicious while using ATMs.The scam involves putting a loop of plastic into the card slot, which then traps cards in the machine.Kristen Rupert

Customers then believe their card has been retained and when they walk away the thief removes the device and steals the card.Another scam being used is card skimming, which involves a device, hidden in the machine, reading the details on the bank card.

This is often in place alongside a secret camera recording the customer entering their personal identification number. Scammers can then create a “cloned” card and run up charges on an account.Police are checking cash machines, while bank staff are carrying out regular checks of their own ATMS.Chief Inspector Martin Cloherty, who is leading the investigation, said customers should “look around to see if there is anything strange or different about the machine

With all the top-level smartphones popping up on the market recently and over the past year, this device seems positively tame. Could it be that Sony is attacking the low-level market with a vengeance? Will this phone be offered for free on-contract, and take the market with that tactic? We’ll see relatively soon!

Strong hand for OLeary

FIRST LIEUTENANT will attempt to keep the sponsor’s money at home when he lines up in Thursdays two-mile Grade One Ryanair Chase at the Punchestown festival. The horse, owned by the Ryanair boss Michael OLeary, had a range of festival options this week but the Gigginstown Stud team have decided he will drop back to the minimum trip having finished runner-up to Bobs Worth in the RSA at Cheltenham last month. The move gives Gigginstown a strong hand in the top novice events at Punchestown with the unbeaten 2013 ante-post Gold Cup favourite Sir Des Champs now a long odds favourite for tomorrows Growise Champion Novice Chase.InvesTECHgate Day

For obvious reasons First Lieutenants owner would like to have a runner in Thursdays race and as he has nothing else entered it has been decided to run First Lieutenant,” Mouse Morris said. Before Republic Lass, Circles of Gold and Triscay were Oaks winners by Golden Slipper winner Marscay, the Biscay horse who landed two Australian sires’ titles when standing at Widden Stud.Stratum kicked off his stud career in spectacular fashion, with the Golden Slipper winner Crystal Lily in his first foal crop.He has a pedigree reeking of Golden Slipper success: his grandsire Danehill has four winners on the roll of honour; his mother Bourgeois is by the Slipper winner Luskin Star; and Bourgeois’ mother Brave New World is by Vain another Slipper winner.

One of Stratums mates in his second stud season was the Coghlan family-owned Pensiamo, whose pedigree owned a foundation of stamina from a prolific stakes-winning family in Britain. But Pensiamo was never given the chance to show what she might do at 1600m and further because she ran only seven times on southern NSW tracks including Canberra, at distances to and earning from her lone second placing in a maiden at Queanbeyan.Bought for at the Sydney Festival yearling sale a third-level auction Pensiamo went to stud in 1997 and produced two fillies, Pawarna and Tessamo, by the Golden Slipper winner Tierce in her first two seasons.

Pensiamo went to Encounter, a Golden Slipper runner-up, for her next four seasons to produce three colts and the filly Enciamo, and she also had a season to Catbird, another Slipper winner, producing a colt to that Danehill horse, before teaming up with Stratum in 2007.
